GENERAL

DALLAS MINDFULNESS

Dallas Mindfulness is committed to challenging existing boundaries among psychotherapy, meditation and all other paths of spiritual awakening, self-actualization and liberation.  It is our belief that each of these areas easily stagnates when in isolation, unnecessarily confining itself within rigid structures, concepts and methods.  It is our goal to meet each individual openly and honestly, outside the confines of any one belief system or fixed set of ideas and techniques.  Consequently, our approaches are flexible, fluid, holistic and innovative, constantly changing to meet the needs of different individuals.

Clinical psychologist, Dr. Heather Robbins, and published author and national lecturer, James Robbins, work together to provide a uniquely integrated and varied environment for cultivating self-understanding.  As they each bring their own set of skills, talents and life experiences to this environment, individuals have the opportunity to benefit from a broad base of disciplines and perspectives.  In this context, a few of the many approaches Heather and James utilize are as follows:

  • a variety of meditative disciplines, both traditional and contemporary

  • dreamwork, including dream analysis, Tibetan and Native American dream practice and general lucid dreaming cultivation

  • traditional and non-traditional psychotherapy

  • personality assessment

  • cognitive-behavioral training

  • group seminars, discussions and workshops

  • spiritual instruction and guidance within a variety of teachings and traditions

INTEGRATIVE FORMAT

Heather and James work both together and separately, on a case-by-case basis.  After meeting with a potential client for an initial consultation, a plan of study, exploration and guidance is agreed uponsometimes emphasizing the role of Heather or James individually, sometimes an integration of both.  Group work may be suggested, as may possible referrals to psychotherapists, counselors and physicians for various treatment options.

Although James and Heather do not limit themselves to any one belief system, they do draw from a wealth of wisdom and metaphysical traditions.  A few of these are listed below:

JAMES ROBBINS, M.A.

James Robbins is a published author of both literary fiction and non-fiction which addresses a variety of spiritual paths and practices.  In support of his recently released book, Build A Better Buddha: The Guide to Remaking Yourself Exactly as You Are, James is currently touring the country, offering lectures and workshops at Unity Churches, meditation/yoga centers and major holistic learning establishments such as The Omega Institute, New York Open Center and Kripalu Center for Yoga and health.  He also teaches locally, both privately through Dallas Mindfulness, and to larger audiences in the Dallas, Austin and Houston areas.

Whatever the teaching format, James communicates through simple, everyday language, humorous anecdotes and illustrative metaphors.  One of his primary concerns is communicating authentic spiritual teachings and practices without exotic jargon and unnecessarily foreign Eastern cultural influences.  His teaching is inclusive rather than exclusiveconsistently focusing on basic practices for expanding awareness fundamental to all paths.

James believes our ordinary, daily relationships provide some of the most direct means toward self-realization.  In this context, he is currently completing, with co-author Heather Robbins, The Tao of Love: A Husband and Wife Dialog on Spiritual Relationships in a Chaotic World.  In support of this work, James and Heather will be traveling nationwide, offering seminars and workshops for couples interested in utilizing their relationships for spiritual development.

HEATHER ROBBINS, PH.D.

Heather Robbins holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.  She operates a local psychotherapy practice (www.hrobbinsphd.com), treating individuals, couples, groups and families.  In addition to her work as a licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Robbins is an experienced researcher, having published numerous studies and academic articles examining the relationship between psychological and medical issues in prestigious trade journals.

Whether offering traditional psychotherapy treatment or more holistic approaches, Heather integrates a variety of disciplines: psychodynamic psychology, cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques, meditation practices and Eastern spiritual beliefs.  Her work explores the relationship between early family experiences and current life obstacles and struggles, illuminating subtle, repeating patterns of personality and behavior.  To this end, she incorporates meditation practices and dreamwork to access aspects of the individual not readily available to habitual, everyday awareness.

Emphasizing interpersonal relationships as a means to expanding self-awareness, Dr. Robbins is currently completing, with co-author James Robbins, a work titled, The Tao of Love: A Husband and Wife Dialog on Spiritual Relationships in a Chaotic World.  Her writing and teaching emphasizes her experience as a clinical psychologist, drawing from real-world case examples to illustrate more abstract Taoist concepts.  In support of this work, Heather and James will be traveling nationwide, offering seminars and workshops for couples interested in utilizing their relationships for spiritual development.
